When I bought my Durango a few years ago, I’ll admit it was for selfish reason.  I just liked having a big truck, and dreamed of offroad hauling far more than I did it.

But that was before disasters started to happen.  First it was medical bills that our insurance didn’t cover. Then it was my job in Belle Meade – gone one day and nobody expected it.  Then came tornado season throughout the south, including some F2s and F3s right here in Tennessee.

The tornadoes (and floods) were actually an opportunity for me, although they were of course tragedies for people directly hit.  Just about a month after I went on unemployment, I heard about work I could get in areas going through storm recovery.  They need lighter trucks to haul salvageable debris to storage and back when new homes were built again.  That’s work I can do.

But that kind of work doesn’t pay right away.  You’re waiting on insurance claims, and then getting paid by your boss who is a subcontractor himself.  So sometimes you work six, eight weeks before you see the money.  Grant it, when it comes in it’s good and well worth the time and travel.   But with my bad credit and bills piling up, I didn’t know how we’d get by.
